Task to Help Manifest Your Sense of Self

Happy Manifestation Monday, everyone! Similarly to Blair, I have recently been trying to live more intentionally, and with greater focus on my goals, my loved ones, and my happiness. This resulted in some distance from social media and other forms of technology that, while being very useful, can also be very distracting!

I will admit that I have felt a little lost these past few weeks, and have struggled with uneasiness from feeling disconnected from the future I would like for myself, as well as uncertainty regarding whether I even know what that future looks like. In questioning even that, I grew more concerned that I was not taking the right steps to create a path that was most reflective of my passions and desires.

First of all, I have resolved to pump the brakes, and stop focusing on what could be or what I should be doing. As I have mentioned in previous posts, there is no straight shot to the end of your path, or correct way to follow your dreams. In fact, let’s reframe that mindset.

We should not be following our dreams at all. We should be chasing them with enthusiasm, and focus.

While focus and drive are a large part of accomplishing your goals, that does not always translate to doors obviously opening, or to a linear pattern in the opportunities presented to you. At times, your life may feel like the unstable offspring of a rabbit-hole and a pin ball machine, but embrace the unexpected and uncertain. There are many branches along your path, and deviations will still present you with chances to attract the people and moments that you need in your life at a particular time.

I had to remind myself of these ideals, and have since promised to designate more time to meditate, to self-reflect, to grow, and to breathe.

To help guide my own meditation, I am consulting Julia Cameron’s, The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, for a second time. I thought that it would be helpful this week to include some questions from an exercise that I have found very helpful for grounding yourself, and for facilitating the recovery of your sense of self. I hope you find it equally helpful!


  1. Affirmative Reading: Every Day, morning and night, get quiet and focused and read the Basic Principles to yourself. Be alert for any attitudinal shifts. Can you see yourself setting aside any skepticisms yet? FullSizeRender (4)
  2. Where does your time go? List your five major activities this week. How much time did you give to each one? Which were what you wanted to do and which were shoulds? How much of your time is spent helping others and ignoring your own desires? Have any of your blocked friends triggered doubts in you?
  3. Take a sheet of paper . Draw a circle. Inside that circle, place topics you need to protect. Place the names of those you find to be supportive. Outside the circle, place the names of those you must be self-protective around just now. Use this map to support your autonomy.
  4. List twenty things you enjoy doing. When was the last time you let yourself do these things? Next to each entry, place a date. Don’t be surprised if it’s been years for some of your favorites. That will change.
  5. From the list above, write down two favorite things that you’ve avoided that could be this week’s goals. These goals can be small. Remember, we are trying to win you some autonomy with your time. Look for windows of time just for you, and use them in small creative acts. Stop looking for big blocks of time when you will be free. Find small bits of time instead.
  6. Write three chosen affirmations five times at the start of each day, especially ones that cause the strongest reaction and sound the most ridiculous.
  7. Life pie: Draw a circle. Divide it into six pieces of pie. Label one piece spirituality, another exercise, another play, etc. Place a dot in each slice at the degree to which you are fulfilled in that area (outer rim indicates great; inner circle, not so great.) Connect the dots. This will show you where you are lopsided. Working with this tool, you will notice that there are areas of your life that feel impoverished and on which you spend little or no time. Use the time tidbits you are finding to alter this.
  8. Ten Tiny Changes: List ten changes you’d like to make for yourself, from the significant to the small or vice versa.
  9. Select one small item and make it a goal for this week.
  10. Now do that item.
