How To Find Local Volunteer Opportunities

The holidays are quickly approaching, and the “most wonderful time of the year” is upon us! Cheery music can be heard playing everywhere you turn, there’s a familiar bustle and excitement felt in every store you enter, and many people seem to be filled with cheer and the spirit of giving. While this often means the exchange of presents and other tangible items, I would like to discuss a less conventional, although equally rewarding, form of giving. I am referring to the giving of time back to your community, through a greater level of engagement. Often times, I do not think it is an absence of caring, or interest, in donating time that leads to a lack of volunteerism amongst people. Rather, I believe this stems from an inability to find these opportunities. I am a huge proponent of volunteering and having a strong presence within your local area, so I would like to dedicate this post to several resources that are available to all of us for finding local volunteer opportunities. Let’s get started 🙂

  1. Idealist.org

I L-O-V-E Idealist.org. Not only is it fantastic for finding local opportunities, but you also have the ability to find opportunities all over the world! To make this site even sweeter, you can also find jobs, internships, and events near whatever area you specify! You can also create a profile, as well as adjust the specifications of your search, in order to more easily find opportunities that are the best fit for you. Overall, this site is an excellent resource that is perfect for finding local engagement events and activities.

  1. Volunteermatch.org

Volunteer Match is another wonderful resource for finding local volunteer opportunities, specifically. Similar to Idealist.org, you can specify what cause you are interested in, and in what area you are looking for related volunteer activities. The site is very user-friendly, and is another great place to start when looking for volunteer opportunities!

  1. Allforgood.org

All For Good, like the other two websites, allows you to find volunteer opportunities within a certain distance of a zip code that you specify. What is also interesting about this site is that you can set the time interval that you are looking to volunteer within, and you can choose to specifically participate in upcoming national events. You also have the option to register your skills and expertise, so that nonprofits that fit your experience and passions are also able to seek you out. Overall, this is another helpful resource of which to take advantage!

  1. Handsonnetwork.org

HandsOn Network also allows users to type in a zip code, and then find volunteer opportunities near that area. What I think is extra fantastic about this organization, however, is that there are Local Volunteer Action Centers all over the United States. These centers utilize skills-based volunteering, and can help individuals and organizations find the cause or skill sets that they are, respectively, seeking. This means that there is a physical location unique to this networking group that you can most likely find near your home, and go directly to in order to find opportunities! There is also the potential to become a HandsOn Corps member and work to combat social issues in the areas of education, economy, and the environment. This site has a variety of chances for engagement, and you should definitely take some time to investigate for yourself!

  1. Google Search Your Interests

If none of the resources that I have provided help you find what you are looking for, you can always Google Search something along the lines of “Local organizations focused on [Insert Area of Interest]” to see what comes up! This basic search will, in the least, lead you to other resources that will facilitate finding an organization or cause that is most true to you.

Thank you for reading guys, and we hope that you all take some time to volunteer with a local organization! We think that you will find these activities extremely rewarding, and will be surprised to find that what may be assumed to be a one time volunteer event, might develop into a long-term relationship with a nonprofit!

Share your thoughts on giving back, ways that you engage with your own community, and any other resources that you may use to find local volunteer opportunities!

Have a great and love-filled week you all  🙂

Love and Light,

HR
